Canaan Lane Primary School opened in 2022 completing the first part of a two stage project. The second stage is the refurbishment of Deanbank house to complete the new school’s accommodation. Canaan Lane Primary School received its first intake of P1 students in August 2022 and the upper floor of the school currently serves as South Morningside Primary Schools infant annex. Canaan Lane Primary School will grow each year relieving enrolment pressure at South Morningside until both schools can be accommodated at their own sites.

  • A bright two storey corridor, roof lights let in a lot of daylight. Upholstered seating is in the centre of the ground floor, on the left wall a large floor to ceiling graphic of a forest is on the wall. A glazed balcony is on the first floor.

  • A breakout space outside the classroom, a rectangle of grey carpet defines the space from the natural wood style flooring of the corridor. Upholstered stools surround a round coffee table and a partially enclosed booth is against the wall in the background.
  • The nursery, with kitchenette in foreground, natural wooden furniture and play equipment, big cushions, floor to ceiling windows

The P1 classrooms are in a large open plan area which gives the children freedom to move about and learn through play. The interior design and furniture provide a warm and comfortable environment and the classroom has direct access to the outdoor play space making it easy for pupils to move into and out of the building.

The first floor classrooms are paired around flexi-spaces that give the opportunity for pupils to spill out from the classroom and work collaboratively in groups. The library space creates a hub for the upper year groups and connects to the hellerup stair which provides a social, presentation and inspirational space with attractive views to mature trees and the outdoor play area.

Deanbank house

The refurbishment of Deanbank house will complete the second stage of Canaan Lane Primary School providing accommodation for upper year groups. The existing building will be altered and modernised to provide larger classrooms, flexible break-out spaces, and tutorial spaces. A full redecoration as well as improved insulation and heating will create a comforting and comfortable learning environment.
