The replacement Newcraighall Primary School will be a three-stream primary school (630 pupil) and 128-pupil nursery, to be built as part of a wider Brunstane residential masterplan. The school will replace the existing primary, situated on Newcraighall Road between Musselburgh and Portobello. The school is designed to be a two-storey, low-energy school, meeting the Passivhaus standard. The school will feature a 2G sports pitch and various internal facilities, envisioned to be used by the wider community.

The learning zones being designed within the school – along with their bespoke furnishings and movable partitions – will give more opportunity to create different environments, allowing a much wider variety of learning, discovering and play when compared to traditional classrooms. This will give the opportunity for all types of learners to thrive in the environments that best suit them. Tutorial and 1:1 rooms will be provided for each learning zone which will also be flexible and can be repurposed as per the requirements of the pupils in that cohort. As the make-up of future cohorts cannot be predicted the Council have worked closely with ASN specialists and internal designers to ensure there is the flexibility in every learning space to allow all to thrive and to allow adaptability of all spaces as learning styles and learners evolve over time.
The current proposed opening date for the replacement Newcraighall Primary School is August 2025. Until that point, the existing school will remain in place for the provision of primary education in the area.
